-The O’Jays

This season of love, FFGW needs you to start a train – a foster train.  Fosters are the single most important part of our mission to save cats, even more important than money, for all the money in the world won’t buy a cat’s way out of the shelter if there’s nowhere for her to go.

I'll give you all I've got to give
If you say you love me too
I may not have a lot to give
But what I've got I'll give to you
I don't care too much for money
For money can't buy me love

-The Beatles

FFGW is primarily a foster-based organization, and we can’t rescue a cat if we don’t have a foster that can love that cat and guide her to adoption.  In addition, our cats at the Leesburg Petsmart need a break from time to time, even for short periods of time, and sometimes a scared cat just needs to know that she’s loved before she’s able to be adopted.

Cats like Rosa…

Rosa came from the Prince Georges County Shelter, was very sick and had to live at our vet for over a week because we didn’t have a foster home for her. A foster finally opened up to take her, and Rosa was so scared on the way to her foster home she shook and cried all the way.  And then, after just a day in a home where she was showered with love…

Rosa remembered that it was ok to relax and be content.

There are many more… cats like Meowly Cyrus

Meowly has that same frightened look as Rosa… and we would get her out of the shelter, if only we had a place for her to go.  Cats like Neko, who was too frightened to go right into the Leesburg Petsmart Adoption Center – only we didn’t discover that until he was already there and so scared.  Fortunately, we had an emergency foster for Neko, and were able to whisk him away (thanks to our transport team) so he could destress at the home of a temporary foster.

And then there are cats like Clara and Charlie.  Their person passed away, and they don’t understand what happened.  Charlie is super outgoing, and would be adopted in a heartbeat – but Clara is very dependent on him and we know that the right thing to do is to adopt them together.  Clara needs some human reassurance that it will all be ok – she needs the love of a foster.

All you need to foster is food, litter and love.  You can foster until a cat is adopted, or can be one of our short term fosters when a cat needs a few days break from the adoption center, or a place to crash until space at the center opens.

What's the biggest reason we hear why people don't want to foster?  It's that they're afraid they won't be able to give the cats up!  Can you tell a cat that she can't be rescued, because you're afraid you'll keep her?  Last month, we told the story of one family who was afraid to foster, and found out how easy it is to let go to the right home - if you missed it, you can read it here:

If you have love to give, simply email foster@ffgw.org, or just reply to our newsletter email.

If you can’t foster, you can still join the Love Train!  Just print out our Foster Flyer, and post it where it will be seen – at work, on your community bulletin board – We’ll feel the love from anything you can do to help promote rescue!  You can find our Foster Flyer here:    Foster Flyer

Because… all you need is love, now, love is all you need!
